David Bucklow is a self-taught fine artist living in Cape Town, South Africa. Born in 1969 in Gauteng, David attributes his ability to create life-like paintings to the steady hand he developed while doing live portrait sketching during his formative years. He started painting while still at high school, with his first painting, however, only being sold in 1997, when he was 28. David has been painting for over 30 years and his work has become sought-after both nationally and internationally. He primarily works with a selection of acrylics on canvas and by doing so he captures hyper-realistic paintings of seascapes and wildlife.Â
His love for wildlife was inspired by observing the African biosphere during his time spent in Mpumalanga. With a camera at hand on all of his adventures, David’s eye is trained to capture moments, which he later transposes onto canvas.Â
His most recognisable pieces feature magnificent portraits of wild animals within contrasted and evocative landscapes that have a sense of being perceived as life-like as if the beholder saw it first-hand.Â
Viewers are drawn into his large-scale paintings through direct eye contact with the animal, an intimate moment for the onlooker to contemplate their existence within nature. David is married for over three decades with three children and one grandchild. When he is not painting, you will find him either trail running or mountain biking. He has completed 11 Two Oceans and five Comrades Marathons.
David Bucklow is a very accomplished two-dimensional career artist with an extensive portfolio of fine art detailing the natural world, landscapes, seascapes, and also portraiture art. He has a global following from Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas. His bold approach of juxtaposing Lions, Leopards, Cheetah's and Zebra creates mesmerizing and hypnotic eye contact for the viewer. You cannot help but fall in love with his artwork. David also reminds all of us of our responsibility towards caring for the natural world by creatively cataloging their visual splendor
